The omega3 health benefits are numerous, as most of you may know by now. But, until recently, it was feared that supplementation might be associated with an increased bleeding risk. The latest research indicates that we don’t really have to worry about that.
It was feared that the supplement could contribute to or complicate bleeding ulcers, ulcerative colitis or other bleeding disorders. It was further feared that there would be an increased risk of bleeding among pregnant women, people recovering from surgery and those taking aspirin or blood thinners.
In the latest study, conducted at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Pennsylvania, researchers compared the number of bleeding episodes that occurred in people taking aspirin and synapse xt a blood thinner to those taking fish oil, aspirin and a blood thinner. They conclude that taking fish oil, which is the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids, is safe, even in combination with other medications.
That being said, an ill person should not self-medicate. If you are in relatively good health, you can safely take up to three grams per day, depending on your weight. Most manufacturers recommend only two grams, which is usually two capsules per day.
The omega3 health benefits are several, many of them relate to the long-term health of the heart. Some of the risk factors for age-related heart diseases are high blood cholesterol, high blood triglycerides and high blood pressure. Fish oil lowers all three.
There is also a benefit to normal, healthy brain function and mood disorders. Infants and toddlers must have access to an omega-3 called DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) or their brains will not develop normally.
Studies have shown that children from elementary school age on up, who have been diagnosed with an attention deficit disorder benefit from a daily supplement. There may also be omega3 health benefits for people with Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative disease of the brain that is eventually fatal.
A daily supplement is beneficial for people that suffer from depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders. When it comes to the brain, the beneficial effects are due to normal brain cell creation and regeneration that cannot occur without the nutrients.
Other beneficial effects have been seen in the area of arthritis, autoimmune diseases, normal immune system function and skin disorders. Many of the positive effects have to do with modulating inflammation.
Most sources will say that the omega3 health benefits are due to the affect that the nutrients have on chronic or systematic inflammation. Normal inflammation is a necessary function of the immune system. It helps to fight infections and to protect the body from additional injury in the case of a sprain or broken bone.
