Once you have decided to learn how to ride a motorbike, it is quite easy. The most important thing is to obtain the correct knowledge and instructions and to give yourself time to practise, gain confidence and build on your skills, so you can stay safe on the road.

Learning to ride a motorcycle is a big decision and not to be made lightly. You may just want a quicker way to get from A to B. You may like the thought of riding on the open road. The first thing you need to do is contact your local motorcycle training centre. Most centres will give you an introduction to the bike, scooter or moped and offer you a free short session. This session will help the trainer see your ability and tailor your training to your specific needs. It also gives you the opportunity to get a feel for the bike and check that it is right for you.

Depending on your age and requirements will help you decide which motorcycle is best for you. Once you have finished your training and decided you would like to ride a motorcycle, the next thing you need to do is do your CBT.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) consists of 5 elements. These are the Introduction, on-site training, on site riding, on road training and road ride. You spend the day with an experienced instructor and able to get advice and ask questions. It is really good and gives you the opportunity to learn lots about your bike and you get great guidance on how to stay safe on the road.

Your CBT will last two years which means you can ride on the road with L-plates, providing you have tax and insurance. This will give you the chance to improve on your riding skills on a smaller bike. If you meet the age requirements there is nothing stopping you from going further and taking your bike test.
