How to Make the Most of Your In-Home Massage on Valentine’s Day (or Any Day!)

Getting a massage on Valentine’s Day typically isn’t just another massage – it’s supposed to be special! So unless you have a therapist you know and love, it makes sense to put some thought into who you are going to call for this very personalized service. This is even more important when you are having someone come to do an in home massage which requires even more consideration.

Most of these tips actually apply no matter when or where you are looking to get a massage, but they are especially worth reviewing for something as special as Valentine’s Day massages.

One of the first suggestions that comes to mind is that you should not wait until the last minute to make your massage booking when possible. When you wait until the last minute to reserve a massage, you have to take what you can get. It’s likely that the best therapists out there are going to book up early, and the ones with plenty of time the day before Valentine’s Day may not be the cream of the crop. So try to book ahead and if you’re using a service, don’t hesitate to request the best massage therapist they have. Never hurts to ask!

You’ll also want to consider if you want a traditional couples massage (side-by-side) or if you want the massages “back-to-back” or two-in-a-row. Many people think that a side-by-side Valentine’s Day couples massage is more romantic. We’ve all seen the pictures from fancy resorts of the happy couple getting their massages together. There is certainly nothing wrong with this. However sometimes it’s better in concept than in reality.

Massage is very personal, and it’s supposed to be a time to relax your mind as well as your body. When your loved one is in the same room getting a massage, it’s nearly impossible to not be distracted, and this can potentially take away from the full service massage experience. Consider getting them back-to-back instead so that you can each fully enjoy the experience. You will have plenty of together time afterward. You may also be able to get a discount if you only require one therapist to come to your home instead of two, although this may be harder to find for massages on Valentine’s Day or other holidays that are very busy for massage therapists.

Next, if you’re not using a personal recommendation, try to find an outcall massage service that works extensively with the local population – and not just tourists. When a company is trying hard to earn repeat local business, the quality is likely to be better. If you’re booking in-hotel massages for Valentines Day, consider bypassing the concierge and doing your own research. Dealing with a company directly will help you to avoid paying potentially marked-up prices, and will also give you a better idea of their professionalism and customer service.

When you call, also be sure to ask lots of questions, and specify the kind of massage you want. Some therapists specialize in certain things (like relaxation massage) but not others (deep tissue massage). You’ll want to try to find a compatible therapist or therapists.

If you are looking at advertisements, be extra careful to ensure that you are going with a reputable therapist or service. By law in most states, massage therapists are supposed to include their license number with any advertisement. If there is no license number, most of the time this means the person is not legitimate, so look out for that. Many states like Florida have tools which allow you to verify the license number, such as this one at the Florida State Department of Health’s web site. I’ve seen people using fake or expired license numbers, so look carefully. Also, most therapists are aware of this issue, so those offering a real therapeutic service will usually go out of their way to make this abundantly clear.
